East Bay Hill and Dale Drive II - Twisty Mountain Hop

An exhilarating 33 mile drive along some of the scenic winding back roads of the Berkeley and South Western Contra Costa County Hills.

Starts at the dead end at the top of Broadway, off of Highway 24, just West of the Caldecott Tunnel, and ends with lunch at the Icelandic-themed Breakfast/Lunch restaurant Katy's Korner, in San Ramon.

9:30 a.m. Head out

Starting Place: Dead end at the top of Broadway, just West of the Caldecott Tunnel.
Lunch: A wide variety of authentic breakfast entrees and hot and cold sandwiches. Bring your own food as needed. Large redwood deck outside with tables to dine at, as well as plenty of indoor seating.

Part 1: Directions to starting place: Dead end at the top of Broadway, just West of the Caldecott Tunnel.

From the East:
>Go north or south on I-680 to Walnut Creek
>Go west on Highway 24
>Exit at Tunnel Road, the first exit after going through the Caldecott Tunnel--Use the right tunnel and stay in its right lane
>Turn left at stop sign onto Caldecott Lane
>Make next left at Freeway Overpass
>Make next left uphill onto Broadway. Stay straight on Broadway, avoid entering the Hwy 24 East on-ramp on your left
>Stop at the dead end and park

From the West:
>Go east on I-580, then East on Highway 24
>Stay in the right lane as you approach the Caldecott Tunnel
>Exit at Tunnel Road, the last exit before the tunnel.
>Make a left turn uphill onto Broadway, stop at the dead end and park

From Marin County:
>Go east on I-580 across Richmond-San Rafael Bridge
>Go west on I-80 through Berkeley and Emeryville
>Go east on I-580, then follow "From the West" instructions.

From San Francisco and Peninsula:
>Go east across Bay Bridge, then follow "From the West" instructions.

From South Bay:
>Go north on I-680, then follow "From the East" instructions.
>Or go north on I-880, east on I-980, east on 24, then follow "From the West" instructions.

Part 2: Route Instructions

0.0 mi. Start at the dead end at the top of Broadway. Set odometer to zero. Go West (downhill) on Broadway. Left turn at stop to Continue on Broadway. Avoid Hwy 24 East on-ramp on your right.
0.4 Turn right on Freeway Overpass. Make next left on Caldecott Lane. Turn right on Tunnel Road East, then immediately take next right turn on Tunnel road.
2.4 mi. Tunnel Road becomes Skyline at the Old Tunnel. Stay to the right.
3.9 mi. Turn left into the Robert Sibley Regional Volcanic Preserve

STOP Here for 10-15min. to check out the Park Station, look around. Then continue by making a left onto Skyline. RESTROOMS

5.9 mi. Take a soft left turn onto Pinehurst Road
8.4 mi. Turn left into the Canyon Post Office

STOP Here to check out the small town of Canyon for 10-15min

9.8 Continue on Pinehurst (stay to the right).
12.6 mi. Turn left onto Redwood Road at the stop sign.

This is the last place to refuel if you really really need it before Castro Valley!

21.3 mi. Turn right into Anthony Chabot Golf Course

STOP Here for 10-15min for Refreshments and Restrooms

23.8 mi. Left on Castro Valley Boulevard at the light

This is the last place to refuel if you really really need it before San Ramon!

24.7 mi. Left on Crow Canyon Road
28.2 mi. Right on Norris Canyon Road (Ignore signs that read "Road Closed Ahead". Road is newly repaved & smooth, and mainly free of traffic. Watch out for slightly raised manhole covers in the fresh pavement section)
32.1 mi. Continue straight through Norris Canyon Road at the stop
32.5 mi. Continue straight through Norris Canyon Road at the stop
32.9 mi. Turn left onto San Ramon Valley Blvd. at the light
33.0 mi. Turn right into the parking lot for lunch at Katie's Korner in San Ramon!
