For me Autumn is as synonymous with 2002 Fest West
as it is with San Luis Obispo. Why? Over the last three years
of coming to San Luis for 02 Fest West I've gained a true appreciation and knowledge of the Central Coast of California. This is part of the
reason I come down early for the event. And besides, by arriving early I have time to check out the Farmers Market on Thursday night.
The city of San Luis closes Higuera Street every Thursday
evening. There is food, bands and farmers
selling fresh produce. Well worth the early
arrival.
As for Autumn? The East may have the leaves with all
of their saturation of color but the golden light and
post-summer warmth of California Autumn is one of my
favorite times and places. And it's in this context
that makes the drive to San Luis from San Francisco
all the better. The dark green tufts of scrub oak dotting the tanned, dried grasses on the hillsides contrasts with the blue sky and makes me
happy. I'm even happier that I'm experiencing all of this in my '02, blasting down 101 and taking it all in.
The bonus of course is that I'm on my way to see a
bunch of other folks like myself who share an
appreciation of the little German box on wheels
otherwise known as the BMW 2002. Not only do I see my
Bay Area friends but I get to see folks from LA, San
Diego, Orange County and the inland counties. This is why San Luis Obispo is such a great location for the event. Some attendees are
friends that I look forward to seeing once a year here
and some are new friends coming for the first time to
an event that they can't even believe.
This year was the tenth anniversary of 2002 Fest
West in San Luis Obispo, an event that Rob
Torres along with his volunteers has organized since
1990. This year like other years brought the 02
faithful in numbers. I heard a count of around 120
cars. The exact number of course isn't as important as
the fact that they came together. As an organizer of
local 02 gatherings I really appreciate the gathering
of so many people from so many places. It's what
brings me back every year.
For some this year's event extended to Saturday night
for a drive down the coast and then Sunday morning for
tech sessions. I myself did not attend the extra
events this year but I understand the drive was
"spirited" and the tech sessions informative.
I've been told by Rob that next year's event will also
take place in Autumn so you know I'll be there. Time
and place and the feeling of being part of something
are very important and I think that is what's behind
the whole reason for my return to SLO.
I hope to see you next year, and if not then, then on
the road.
Happy '02ing.
