Round or Square: Which is which?
Big bumpers, small bumpers, round lights, square
lights, you're right, it CAN be confusing! Basically,
there are two types of 2002s: Newer models built from
1974 to 1976 with big bumpers and square taillights,
and older models built from 1966 to 1973 with small
bumpers and round taillights.
A nice example of a big bumper car.

There's good and bad to both sides of the argument.
The newer cars have better electrical systems and more
comfortable seats, the bumpers are really bumpers and
the square taillights are brighter. But the older
cars are smog exempt in California and some other
states, and the smaller chrome bumpers are considered
more stylish by some people. The round
taillights.....wars were known to have been started by
discussions on the merits of round taillights versus
square taillights more than two decades ago, and they
continue to this day.
There's quite a few different models of 2002. First,
there is also the 1600, which is a 2002 with a smaller
displacement engine and usually weaker brakes and
suspension. Then it gets interesting. There were
Baur cabrios (convertibles) and the dual carbureted ti
(touring international) model for both, with a
targa-top (open roof) car also being built by Baur,
although nowdays it is very rare. Then there was the
hatchback touring. The tii (touring international
injection) in 1972 was the successor to the ti, with
an updated body and trim and the all-important
Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection system instead
of the dual sidedraft carburetors. Then along came
the turbo in 1974/1975.

The turbo, cabrio, targa, touring and ti are all
European market cars and quite rare here in America.
Because of that, we'll concentrate on what is usually
found for sale, the 2002 and 2002tii.
